Shooting Board Bench Hook Plans

The shooting board is a tool that disappeared when hand planes stopped being used by most woodworkers. A bench hook is essential for making crosscuts by hand and with the addition of shooting board features both for 90 degree and miters cuts it becomes an ultra precise cutting jig for fine tuning project parts to a perfect fit.

Now i wish i could tell you that ive cooked up a new design of bench hook that trumps traditional designs.

Shooting board bench hook plans. To square the ends of boards i use a bench hook which requires no clamping to the bench and is smaller only about 14 square. Finally add a batten at the front underside to function as a bench hook or for secure clamping in a bench vise. These traditional tools are fast and easy to make and essential for any hand tool shop. You will want to glue a strip along the front under the deck of the board so that it can hook on the front of the bench.

Plus building one takes minutes not hours. If you want to cut straight with hand saws you should build two simple jigs that make straight cuts easy and repeatable. I have been teaching hand tool ww for a long time and as i see beginners struggle with issues.

I finish in a coat of danish oil. For many years i tried to design a shooting board and bench hook that would be worthy of publishing in popular woodworking magazine.
